Greetings and welcome to the latest television review and this week it’s one of the plethora of home improvement shows specifically ‘Kirstie and Phil’s love it or list it‘ a new edition to this middle class eye candy. This is another new series on channel 4 I will get round to actually reviewing something on one of the other channels, so with any further procrastination let’s get to it.
Kirstie and Phil’s Love it or List it
This genre of shows from ‘Place in the sun‘ to ‘Grand Designs‘ or any of the cornucopia of others that clog the airwaves during the day and early evening, are the middle classes aspirational eye candy to fill the dull monotony of their suburban lives. The premise of this show is if you’re a well off middle class family who’s got a truck load of cash to throw away you can let Phil and Kirstie come round film your house and then proceed to trash they way it looks and is used. After having had a good nose around the Guinea pigs home they split ways with Kirstie having some kind of budget to renovate the home and Phil being sent out to find a replacement. Now both Phil and Kirstie are talented individuals, though I have my doubts about Kirstie’s chintzy taste. Phil and Kirstie are given a two month period in which the renovations are done and Phil finds a bunch of replacement houses and shows the couples round, cue the awkward jokes and forced smiles ha ha ha we’re all F**king buddies.
The obviousness of the premise is glaring! why stay in house you don’t like? it makes obvious sense to spend money making your house a home or ship out and move on. But all of this is dependent on having money, time and a willingness to do it, and with the 40 hour work weeks most people have you’d be lucky to find someone bothered enough to cook a fresh meal let alone redo the sodding kitchen. The only draw in this otherwise bland filler TV show is the watching the guinea pigs descend into martial rows and arguments and the possibility of future divorce on the cards. The houses Phil finds follow a plot so simple it could be an ITV drama from not good enough to wow we might actually move into this one. The 5 seconds of actual drama in this when the guinea pigs finally get to see the renovation and make the final decision to love it or list it is of course dragged out for maximum effect.
Frankly I find this to be just another house renovation show with a simple gimmick to at least try and dredge up some kind of tension/excitement and while watching Phil and Kirstie at work is always amusing(when will they make a sex tape?) and at a push it does at least get the message across that you don’t need to move or sell your home, you can in effect change the home your living in by throwing money at it.Now excuse me while I go flush my logic glands out after watching this tripe.
